We thought of celebrating the New Year little differently. Zipping backpacks, we headed towards our calling – the Himalayas. This time our destination was Lover’s Meet viewpoint, Peshok. Yes you heard it correct, there is a romantic view point on Peshok Road called Triveni or Sangam, where two eternal lovers meet – Rangeet and Teesta.

By road, it takes around 2.5 hours (roughly 70 kilometers) from New Jalpaiguri railway station. There is no shared or public transport in this circuit, so private taxi is the only option. They charge quite high compared to standard routes due to scarcity of return trips.

We had travelled by Darjeeling Mail this time, so reached NJP station early morning. Breaking our fast with day’s first cup of tea, we embarked upon our road trip to Peshok.

Near Teesta Bazar

From NJP, we drove through Sevoke Road, followed by Rishi Road at the final stretch. Till Teesta Bazar, the road was pretty good except near Kalijhora where road conditions degraded abruptly due to a recent landslide. The uphill drive of 3.5 kilometers along the Peshok Tea Gardens started from there until Lover’s Meet point. By 11.30am, we had reached the spot.

Peshoke Tea Estate

The lush greenery of Peshok Tea Estate was eye soothing as in the cities we hardly get to find so much of green at one shot. Climbing a flight of around twenty steps, we reached the Lover's Meet view point. The car was parked at a distance on the Rishi road itself.

What a splendid landscape! It was a cloudless morning and a picture-perfect bird’s eye view of the confluence made our day. On our left were the hills of Sikkim through which Rangeet flows in and on right, our very own Kalimpong foothills making way to bubbling Teesta, conjointly blessing the union of the two Himalayan streams at Peshok. Lover’s Meet viewpoint, Peshok takes a little over 1 hour to reach by car from Darjeeling.The view from Lover’s Meet viewpoint, Peshok is truly a treat to the eyes.

Rangeet’s water looks emerald-green while Teesta offers crystal clarity flowing straight down the mountains. The river valley down below bids an awesome rafting opportunity and a college troop was actually gearing up for adventure on the waters of Teesta during our stopover.

Tomato Chat

There was a snacks vendor selling indigenous items which tempted us to taste one of his delicacies. Honestly speaking it was one of the best ever Tomato Chat that we tasted.

We spent almost half a day, silently watching the nature all around.

Giant Malabar Squirrel

Chirping of unknown Himalayan birds and a Giant Malabar Squirrel added to the blissful melody. The only interruption that we allowed was a cup of steaming Darjeeling green tea to complement our romantic moments.

For trips, carrying scrunchies and sunglasses are very important. Scrunchies come very handy and sunglasses are the best way to keep your eyes protected from the harmful rays of the sun. Sneakers are also a must, for they are really comfortable and easy to be worn with almost every outfit.
